THE POSITION

 

The successful applicant will join a passionate team in a role that involves producing engaging content for our growing digital and print audience. As a key member of the editorial team, you will have a strong digital focus, so a significant part of your job will be using your creative skills to deliver news and information from our  journalists out in the field to our digital audience.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is innovative, has a sound understanding of social media and online production and can work in the fast-paced digital media world.

The successful candidate would be based at one of the APN ARM sites in Queensland [Ipswich, Toowoomba, Warwick, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast]. As part of the role there would also be some travel with the Rural Weekly and Big Rigs team.

Initial training for the position would be at the APN ARM’s Sunshine Coast and Ipswich offices.

 

 

THE PUBLICATIONS

 

The successful applicant will have a joint role with two APN specialist publications.

The Rural Weekly is publication with a strong agricultural presence covering Queensland and northern New South Wales with a print circulation of 130,000+.

Big Rigs National Road Transport Newspaper is a national fortnightly publication with a circulation of 26,000 that gives a voice to today’s truckies.

 

THE CRITERIA

 

You need to be passionate about social media, Instagram, Twitter and online content. An understanding or a willingness to learn about video production and experience uploading stories to websites would be an advantage.

You will also be willing to learn, love a challenge, be a self-starter and be passionate about news and delivering it to audiences how, when and where they want it.

An exciting opportunity under our recently launched brand NZME., being New Zealand Media and Entertainment has presented itself and we are now seeking an exceptional, commercially accomplished and talented GM Finance to join our team.

This position will have a sole focus on our E-Commerce Team, including GrabOne which is the third largest e-commerce site in New Zealand and will be tasked with leveraging opportunities within our existing platforms along with helping to manage and establish new commercial opportunities.

Reporting to the Group E-commerce and New Ventures Director, this role will be responsible for the overall management of accounting, financial and investment functions of all Group e-commerce and new venture businesses. Your proven experience, tenure and involvement in previous strategic financial roles with a strong acquisitions focus will see you contributing your ideas, perspective and commercial knowledge to achieve our business objectives.  Important to this role will be a proven e-commerce retail background and a very clear understanding of the importance of an agile and entrepreneurial mind-set that enables the business to react quickly and confidently without added and unnecessary road blocks.

Your natural ability to engage, influence and drive teams/individuals to work towards a common goal will enable you to successfully champion finance and provide meaningful insight to maximise business performance and play a key role in the planning and implementation of all acquisitions, new ventures and e-commerce project work.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Financial modelling, planning and reporting across Group e-commerce and new ventures;
  • Ensuring sound accounting systems, standards, policies and procedures to safeguard assets;
  • Coordinating the preparation of long-term business plans and corporate strategies, annual plans and cash flows as well as reviewing performance against these;
  • Overseeing strict implementation of financial management and control systems while ensuring compliance with financial rules and regulations;
  • Establishing an effective treasury management system that secures company funds, monitors liquidity, cash flow, investments and working capital and ensures maximisation of profits in an efficient and savvy manner;
  • Collaborating on e-commerce projects – reviewing, structuring and negotiating new ventures and acquisitions
  • Assessing investment opportunities and providing, due diligence, reporting, analysis and commercial advice
  • Providing financial advice to the Group Executive Team and preparing and analysing financial reports provided to the Team;
  • Structuring and working with Intellectual Property assets
  • Assistance in structuring group processes, compliance and risk management
  • Develop reports processes and analytical models to support NZME. Group digital businesses and help ensure timely, accurate, efficient reporting and analysis of financial results with the intent to enable sound decision making
  • Create deep partnerships across the Group to promote transparency, communication and teamwork, resulting in improved      operational results and financial feedback

To enable you to perform this role successfully, required skills will include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting
  • 10+ years’ experience in relevant financial roles
  • MBA and/or CFA highly desirable
  • Thought leadership in financial analysis, financial reporting, data mining and management, and scenario planning and analysis
  • Ability to implement sound change management methodologies including documentation, analysis and design, quality assurance, financial data management and internal controls
  • Critically analyse financial and operational information to ensure data accuracy as well as to identify fluctuation in trends, risks and opportunities, with the ability to troubleshoot problems with data, calculations, communications, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly present complex financial information in a variety of forums both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with treasury, cash forecasting, interest hedging and debt covenant compliance methodologies, with the intent to optimise interest expense reduction while maintaining sufficient operating cash requirements
  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented
  • Strong backbone with an ability to effectively articulate and communicate complex analysis

This is a diverse and challenging role, responsible for managing the development of an existing client base and working with the advertising sales team to drive sales. New GMs appointed to Warwick and Gympie

Two of APN’s most dedicated staff have decided to give their careers a fresh impetus by accepting new roles within the company.

Bruce Partridge and Peter Read will soon be taking on new and exciting challenges with Peter taking up the position of General Manager of the Gympie Business Unit and Bruce moving into Peter’s now vacated position as General Manager at Warwick.

Peter Read has spent five successful years at the Warwick Daily News and Stanthorpe Border Post, helping oversee the major restructure of the Warwick Daily News. A strong advocate of the local Warwick community, Peter and his family have been involved in many local groups and programs including the Warwick Rotary Club – which Peter was a past president – the Warwick Tourism and Events, the Warwick Business Excellence Awards and the Warwick Council’s International Relations Committee. Not one to waste idle time, Peter’s interests outside of work include regular workouts at the gym (including a Friday morning boxing class with a number of the Warwick staff), bushwalking, golf, tennis and cycling. Peter will be joined by his wife, Bronwyn, in Gympie when their current home is sold.

A 40-year APN veteran, Bruce spent 35 years in Coffs Harbour working within print management and advertising sales before heading to Queensland in 2002. Working throughout the company’s Queensland sites, Bruce will move to Warwick after excelling in positions at the Bundaberg NewsMail (Media Advertising Manager) and the Fraser Coast Chronicle (Media Advertising Manager). However, his newspaper management career started with South Burnett Times Group back in 2002 when it included the Western Times, Balonne Beacon and both North and South Burnett Times publications. These country paid titles were highly profitable and Bruce still looks back fondly on a very satisfying time. “It wasn’t unusual to drive 400km to St George, have meetings or interviews and possibly drive another 400km to Charleville to do the same there and then home 600km the following day,” he said.

“It was a great introduction to the unique outback landscape and fantastic people of Queensland. Despite the many major shifts in both location and working environments, Bruce said he had picked up many skills which will help him thrive in his new role at The Daily News. “Staff thrive on empowerment and encouragement, either 600km away or in the next room,” he said. “I will admit to being excited about working back in a more rural landscape at Warwick, with my love of horses and rural lifestyle it will be a pleasure.”

Peter and Bruce take up their respective roles on Monday March 12.
